Stefan Zweig was an Austrian writer, born in Vienna. He became known for his novels, short stories, and biographies. Zweig studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and published his first volume of poetry, Silberne Saiten, in 1901. He gained recognition for his novellas and short stories, including Amok (1922) and Letter from an Unknown Woman (1922).
Zweig wrote several acclaimed biographies, such as Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman (1932), Mary Stuart (1935), and Magellan: The Man and His Deed (1938). His historical works often focused on figures from European history. Zweig’s memoir, The World of Yesterday, was published posthumously in 1942.
His books were translated into numerous languages and achieved international popularity during his lifetime. Zweig’s works for younger readers include adaptations and retellings of historical events and figures. He did not receive major literary awards during his career, but his influence on 20th-century literature remains widely acknowledged. The World of Yesterday is regarded as a significant account of pre-war Europe.
