Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Simon Philip is a British children’s author known for his picture books and early fiction. His debut picture book, You Must Bring a Hat, illustrated by Kate Hindley, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2016. The book was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2017.
Philip has written several other picture books, including I Really Want the Cake (2017), illustrated by Lucia Gaggiotti, which was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2018 and the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards (Lollies) in 2020. Other titles include I Really Want to Win (2018), I Really Want to Shout Out Loud (2020), and I Really Want to Be First (2021), all illustrated by Lucia Gaggiotti and published by Templar Publishing.
Philip’s works also include Be More Bernard (2019), illustrated by Kate Hindley, and Fred (2018), illustrated by Lucia Gaggiotti. In addition to picture books, he has written early fiction such as Wizarding for Beginners (2017) and Monster Doughnuts (2020), the latter illustrated by Sarah Horne and published by Piccadilly Press.
Simon Philip’s books have been translated into multiple languages and are published by leading UK publishers including Simon & Schuster, Templar Publishing, and Piccadilly Press. I Really Want the Cake was selected for the BookTrust Time to Read campaign in 2019.
