Sane Guruji (Pandurang Sadashiv Sane; 24 December 1899–11 June 1950) was a Marathi author, teacher, social activist and participant in India’s independence movement. Trained in Marathi and Sanskrit with a master’s degree in philosophy, he began his career as a schoolteacher before dedicating himself to public work, including civil disobedience campaigns and educational initiatives.
His best-known book is the autobiographical Shyamchi Aai, narrated over a series of nightly reminiscences and centred on the formative influence of a mother on her son. Widely regarded as a classic of Marathi literature for young and general readers, it has remained in print in multiple editions and translations. The celebrated Marathi film adaptation, written and directed by Acharya Atre, received the President’s Gold Medal for Best Feature Film at the inaugural National Film Awards recognising 1953 releases.
Alongside writing for children and families, Sane Guruji worked to broaden access to learning across Indian languages. While imprisoned for his political activity he studied other regional languages and later translated texts, fostering inter-regional understanding through the Antar Bharati movement. He was also associated with the development of Sadhana, a Marathi periodical devoted to social and cultural debate.
Remembered as an inspiring speaker and teacher as well as a prolific writer, Sane Guruji placed ethical reflection and everyday compassion at the heart of his books and public life. His work continues to be read in schools and community settings, with Shyamchi Aai remaining a touchstone for discussions of character, family and responsibility.
