Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Shirley-Anne McMillan is a Northern Irish writer of young adult fiction.
An extract from her novel A Good Hiding appeared in the anthology Undiscovered Voices (2014). Her later novels include The Unknowns (published 7 December 2017) and Every Sparrow Falling (published by Atom). In 2023, Little Island Books published her young adult novel Grapefruit Moon.
McMillan has worked as a teacher and has been connected with writing and mentoring work in education settings. Arts Council of Northern Ireland has credited her with previous work as an Online Writer in Residence for the Irish Writers Centre, and with teaching creative writing at the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast.
On 5 March 2024, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Queen’s University Belfast announced McMillan as the new Children’s Writing Fellow for Northern Ireland, taking up the post in Spring 2024 at the Seamus Heaney Centre.
