Sergio Cariello biography

Sergio Cariello (born 23 April 1964, Recife, Brazil) is a Brazilian–American comic-book artist whose work spans major US publishers and faith-based imprints. He began drawing professionally as a child, creating the weekly strip Frederico, the Detective at 11 and continuing it until age 14. After studying at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, he worked in the Marvel Bullpen before establishing a freelance career across superhero, western and adventure titles.

Cariello has illustrated for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, CrossGen and Dynamite Entertainment, contributing to characters and series including Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Iron Man and Wonder Woman. With writer Brett Matthews he drew Dynamite’s relaunch of The Lone Ranger, a run recognised with an Eisner Award nomination in 2007. Other long-form projects include the historical adventure sequence Son of Samson (with Gary Martin) for Zondervan.

He is widely known for illustrating The Action Bible for David C Cook, a 752-page graphic retelling of the Bible first published on 1 September 2010 and since issued in multiple formats and languages. The project reimagines the 1978 classic The Picture Bible for contemporary readers and has led to companion volumes and study editions.

Alongside professional work, Cariello taught for seven years at the Joe Kubert School, delivering courses in drawing and storytelling. His published credits and teaching reflect an emphasis on clear page design, dynamic action and readable visual narratives for a broad readership.
