S.E. Hinton is an American author best known for her contributions to young adult fiction. She began writing at a young age and completed her first novel, The Outsiders, while still in high school. The book was published by Viking Press in 1967. The Outsiders is widely recognised for its portrayal of teenage life and its focus on themes such as class conflict and identity.
Following the success of her debut, Hinton wrote several other novels for young readers, including That Was Then, This Is Now (1971), Rumble Fish (1975), and Tex (1979), all published by Viking Press. Her works often explore the challenges faced by adolescents and are set in contemporary American settings.
In addition to her novels, Hinton has written a children’s book titled Big David, Little David (1995) and a novel for adults, Hawkes Harbor (2004). Her books have been published in numerous editions and remain part of school curricula in various countries.
In 1988, S.E. Hinton received the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature.
