Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Ross Welford is a British children’s author known for his middle-grade novels. Before becoming a writer, he worked as a magazine journalist and television producer. Welford’s debut novel, Time Travelling with a Hamster, was published by HarperCollins Children’s Books in 2016. The book was shortlisted for the Costa Children’s Book Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
Following his debut, Welford published What Not to Do If You Turn Invisible in 2017, The 1,000-Year-Old Boy in 2018, and The Dog Who Saved the World in 2019. His subsequent works include The Kid Who Came from Space (2020), When We Got Lost in Dreamland (2021), and Into the Sideways World (2022). His books are published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.
Welford’s novels have been translated into several languages. Time Travelling with a Hamster was longlisted for the Branford Boase Award and the UKLA Book Award. The 1,000-Year-Old Boy was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Award in 2019. Welford has appeared at literary festivals and school events across the UK.
In 2022, Welford published Into the Sideways World with HarperCollins Children’s Books.
