Rebecca Colby is a children’s author who writes picture books and poetry. She began making up songs before she had learned the alphabet, and winning an essay contest at age 12 helped to shape her ambition to become an author. Before writing for children, she worked for a Russian comedian, taught English in Taiwan, travelled as a tour director and worked as a librarian.
Her picture books include It’s Raining Bats & Frogs, illustrated by Steven Henry and published by Feiwel & Friends; the book is a Halloween story about Delia, a little witch who tries to save the Witch Parade from bad weather. Motor Goose, illustrated by Jef Kaminsky, was published by Feiwel & Friends on 11 July 2017 and reimagines Mother Goose rhymes with vehicles such as trains, planes, trucks and boats.
Crocodiles Need Kisses Too, illustrated by Penelope Dullaghan, was published by Viking Books for Young Readers on 7 April 2020 as a 40-page picture book for children aged 2 to 5. The rhyming text presents animals such as crocodiles, porcupines, tigers and snakes as creatures that need affection too.
Her National Trust books with Nosy Crow include The Castle the King Built, illustrated by Tom Froese, and Beatrix and Her Bunnies, illustrated by Caroline Bonne-Müller. The Castle the King Built is a verse-based creative non-fiction book about medieval history and the people who lived and worked in castles. Beatrix and Her Bunnies: The Story of Beatrix Potter, by Rebecca Colby and Caroline Bonne-Müller, was published by Nosy Crow in collaboration with the National Trust in 2021.
