Paul Howard is a British children’s author and illustrator. He studied graphic design on a course that specialised in illustration and worked at the Natural History Museum before becoming a full-time illustrator.
Howard has illustrated books by writers including Allan Ahlberg, Michael Rosen, Anne Fine, Jeanne Willis, Jill Tomlinson and Joe Wicks. His illustration work includes editions of Jill Tomlinson’s animal stories, including The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.
His own books include the Bugville illustrated fiction titles and the board book 1, 2, BOO!: A Spooky Counting Book. He has also illustrated picture books including I Went to the Supermarket, I Went to See Santa and Joe Wicks’s The Burpee Bears books.
The Bravest Ever Bear, written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by Howard, won the Blue Peter Book Award for Best Book to Read Aloud in 2001. Howard was appointed Children’s Writing Fellow for Northern Ireland at the Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen’s University Belfast, for 2022-23.
