Padmacandra biography

Padmacandra is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s picture books. She studied illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, where she completed an MA in Children’s Book Illustration. Her background also includes experience as a Buddhist monastic, which has influenced her creative approach and themes.

Padmacandra’s debut picture book, The Tale of the Whale, was written by Karen Swann and illustrated by Padmacandra. It was published by Scallywag Press in 2021. The book explores themes of friendship and environmental awareness, following a child and a whale on a journey through the ocean. The Tale of the Whale was shortlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize in 2022, which recognises promising newcomers to children’s book illustration.

In addition to her debut, Padmacandra has illustrated The Grumpy Fairies, published by Scallywag Press in 2022. This book, which she both wrote and illustrated, tells the story of a group of fairies with unique personalities and explores themes of acceptance and individuality.

Padmacandra’s work is characterised by detailed, expressive illustrations and a focus on nature and emotional connection. Her books have been featured in recommended reading lists for primary schools and have received attention for their visual storytelling and gentle messages.

In 2022, The Tale of the Whale was shortlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize.
