Noel Streatfeild biography

Noel Streatfeild was an English author best known for her children’s books, particularly the classic novel Ballet Shoes. She was born in Sussex, England, and initially pursued a career in acting before turning to writing. Streatfeild’s experience in the theatre influenced much of her work, with many of her stories focusing on children involved in the performing arts.

Her first children’s book, Ballet Shoes, was published by J.M. Dent in 1936. The novel follows the lives of three adopted sisters who attend a stage school in London, and it has remained in print for decades. Streatfeild went on to write numerous other books for children, many of which also centre on young people pursuing artistic or sporting ambitions. These include Theatre Shoes, Skating Shoes, Thursday’s Child, and White Boots.

In addition to her children’s fiction, Streatfeild wrote adult novels, biographies, and non-fiction. Her works have been published by several major publishers, including J.M. Dent and Collins. Streatfeild’s books are noted for their detailed depiction of the worlds of theatre, ballet, and other disciplines, as well as for their realistic portrayal of family life and ambition.

Noel Streatfeild received the Carnegie Medal in 1938 for her novel The Circus Is Coming (published in the United States as Circus Shoes).
