Niki Daly is a South African author and illustrator known for his contributions to children’s literature. He has written and illustrated numerous picture books, often drawing on South African settings and themes. Daly’s work includes both original stories and retellings of traditional tales, and he is recognised for his distinctive illustration style.
Among his notable books is Not So Fast, Songololo, which was first published in 1985. This book has received recognition for its portrayal of everyday life in South Africa and its focus on intergenerational relationships. Daly has also created the Jamela series, which follows the adventures of a young girl named Jamela. Titles in this series include Jamela’s Dress and Where’s Jamela?
In addition to his own writing, Daly has illustrated books for other authors. His illustrations are characterised by expressive characters and vibrant scenes that reflect the diversity of South African life. Daly’s books have been published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and other publishers.
Niki Daly’s Not So Fast, Songololo was awarded the US Parents’ Choice Award in 1986.
