Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Morag Hood is a Scottish author and illustrator known for her picture books for children. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where she completed a Master’s degree in Children’s Book Illustration. Hood’s debut picture book, Colin and Lee, Carrot and Pea, was published by Two Hoots in 2016. The book was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the UKLA Book Award.
Hood has written and illustrated several other picture books, including I Am Bat (2017), When Grandad Was a Penguin (2017), Aalfred and Aalbert (2019), and Brenda Is a Sheep (2019). Her work is recognised for its distinctive illustration style and use of humour. I Am Bat was shortlisted for the BookTrust Storytime Prize and the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards (Lollies).
Hood’s books have been published by Two Hoots, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Books. She has also illustrated titles for other authors, including Dig, Dig, Digger by Morag Hood and illustrated by Ella Okstad. Her book Aalfred and Aalbert was longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2020.
Morag Hood’s picture books have been translated into several languages. In 2021, her book Brenda Is a Sheep was shortlisted for the BookTrust Storytime Prize. Hood continues to publish new titles with Two Hoots, including Spaghetti Hunters (2020) and Dig, Dig, Digger (2021).
