Matthew Bothwell is a British astronomer, science communicator, and author. He is the Public Astronomer at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge. Bothwell specialises in communicating complex astronomical concepts to a wide audience through public talks, media appearances, and writing.
He completed his undergraduate studies in Physics and Astronomy at Durham University, followed by a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. Bothwell’s research interests include galaxy formation and evolution, and he has contributed to academic publications in these fields.
Bothwell is the author of The Invisible Universe: Why There’s More to Reality than Meets the Eye, published by Oneworld Publications in 2021. The book explores the unseen aspects of the cosmos, such as dark matter, dark energy, and the cosmic microwave background, aiming to make these topics accessible to general readers.
In addition to his writing, Bothwell regularly delivers public lectures and participates in outreach activities to promote science education. He has appeared on radio programmes and podcasts to discuss astronomy and cosmology.
