Here’s our selection of top new titles coming out in summer 2019. These reading recommendations include picture books, early and middle-grade fiction; young adult novels and non-fiction.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Matt Brown is a British children’s author and broadcaster best known for comic, high-energy fiction. A former radio producer and TV presenter on shows including Nickelodeon and Love Island Aftersun, he later turned to writing for middle-grade readers and creating author interviews for his podcast, The Word Monkeys.
Brown’s debut series began with Compton Valance: The Most Powerful Boy in the Universe, followed by The Time-Travelling Sandwich Bites Back and further adventures featuring runaway inventions and time-slip mayhem. He went on to write the Dreary Inkling School books – Aliens Invaded My Talent Show, Mutant Zombies Cursed My School Trip and Killer Vending Machines Wrecked My Lunch – illustrated by Paco Sordo.
Alongside his fiction he co-edited The Mab: Eleven Epic Stories from the Mabinogi with Eloise Williams, inviting leading writers to retell Welsh myths for contemporary children. His books are published by imprints including Usborne and Unbound.
Compton Valance: The Most Powerful Boy in the Universe was first published in June 2014, and The Mab was published in 2022.
