Margaret Wise Brown was an American author best known for her contributions to children’s literature. She wrote over 100 books and stories during her career, many of which have become classics in the genre. Brown studied at Hollins College and later attended the Bank Street College of Education in New York, where she was influenced by progressive educational theories that shaped her approach to writing for children.
Brown’s work is characterised by its rhythmic language and focus on the everyday experiences of young children. She often collaborated with illustrators, including Clement Hurd and Leonard Weisgard, to create picture books that have remained popular for generations. Among her most well-known works are Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny, both illustrated by Clement Hurd and published by Harper & Brothers.
In addition to her writing, Brown worked as an editor for the publisher William R. Scott, where she helped develop new approaches to children’s books. Her influence extended beyond her own publications, as she encouraged other writers and illustrators to experiment with form and content in books for young readers.
Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon was first published in 1947 by Harper & Brothers.
