Mal Peet was an English author known for his work in children’s and young adult fiction. He studied English and American Studies at the University of Warwick. Peet’s debut novel, Keeper, was published in 2003 by Walker Books. The novel won the Branford Boase Award and the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Bronze Award.
Peet continued the football-themed Paul Faustino series with The Penalty (2006) and Exposure (2008). Exposure won the 2009 Costa Children’s Book Award. His standalone novel Tamar (2005), set during World War II, received the 2005 Carnegie Medal.
Peet also wrote Life: An Exploded Diagram (2011), which was shortlisted for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize. His later works include The Murdstone Trilogy (2014) and Beck (2016), the latter completed posthumously by Meg Rosoff and published by Walker Books.
Mal Peet’s novels have been translated into several languages and have received multiple literary awards, including the Carnegie Medal and the Costa Children’s Book Award.
