Maisie Chan is a British-born Chinese author of children’s literature, recognised for her contributions to diverse storytelling. She was born in Birmingham and currently resides in Glasgow with her family. Chan began her writing career in 2006, initially focusing on short stories and flash fiction. Her debut children’s novel, Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths, was published by Piccadilly Press in 2021. The novel won the 2022 Jhalak Children’s and YA Prize and the Branford Boase Award. It was also shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards and longlisted for the Diverse Book Awards 2022.
Chan’s second novel, Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu, was released by Piccadilly Press in 2023. The book was longlisted for the Diverse Book Awards 2023 and was named one of Kirkus Review’s Best Middle-Grade Books of 2023. She also writes the Tiger Warrior series under the name M. Chan, published by Hachette. Additionally, she has authored a collection of fairy tales and myths titled Stories From Around the World, published by Scholastic.
In 2020–21, Chan served as the Dr Gavin Wallace Fellow at Moat Brae, a creative writing centre in Scotland. She has been a Scottish Book Trust writer-in-residence twice and has led creative writing workshops for organisations such as Arvon, Writing West Midlands, and BBC Teach. Chan is also the founder of the Bubble Tea Writers Network, which supports and encourages writers of East and Southeast Asian descent in the UK.
Chan has contributed to various anthologies, including The Very Merry Murder Club (Farshore), and has been commissioned to write stories for organisations such as Historic Environment Scotland and BBC Scotland. Her work has been recognised for its contributions to children’s literature, particularly in representing diverse voices and experiences.
