Lois Lowry is an American author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She began her writing career in the 1970s, publishing her first novel, A Summer to Die, in 1977 with Houghton Mifflin. Lowry is the author of more than forty books for young readers, including the Anastasia Krupnik series and the Gooney Bird Greene series.
Lowry is widely recognised for her novel Number the Stars (1989), which won the Newbery Medal in 1990. The book explores the experiences of a Danish family during the Second World War. In 1993, she published The Giver, a dystopian novel that received the Newbery Medal in 1994. The Giver has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into a feature film released in 2014. The novel is the first in a quartet, followed by Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004), and Son (2012).
Lowry’s works have received numerous accolades. In addition to her two Newbery Medals, she has been awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award by the American Library Association in 2007 for her significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. Her books have also been recognised by the National Jewish Book Award and the Regina Medal.
Lowry’s writing often addresses complex themes such as memory, individuality, and social responsibility. Her books have been published by Houghton Mifflin, Random House, and other major publishers. In 2016, she published Looking Back: A Book of Memories, a memoir reflecting on her life and career. The Giver remains one of her most widely read and studied works.
