Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Liz Flanagan is a British author of children’s and young adult fiction. She studied at the University of Cambridge and later completed a PhD in Creative Writing at Leeds Trinity University. Flanagan’s debut novel, Eden Summer, was published by David Fickling Books in 2016. The book was shortlisted for the 2017 Branford Boase Award and the 2017 Leeds Book Award.
Her subsequent works include the Dragon Daughter series, published by David Fickling Books. The first book, Dragon Daughter, was released in 2018 and won the 2019 Calderdale Book of the Year. The sequel, Rise of the Shadow Dragons, was published in 2020. Flanagan’s books have been translated into several languages.
She has worked in publishing and education, including roles at the National Centre for Writing and as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow. In 2022, Flanagan published Wildsmith: Into the Dark Forest, illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton, with UCLan Publishing. The book was shortlisted for the 2023 James Reckitt Hull Children’s Book Award.
Flanagan’s novel Wildsmith: City of Secrets was published in 2023. Her work has received recognition from literary award bodies and educational organisations.
