Kevin Sinfield was born in Oldham and retired in 2016 after a rugby league career with Leeds Rhinos and England. He captained Leeds Rhinos from 2003 and, in 521 matches for the club, won seven Super League titles and two Challenge Cups. In 2015 he became the first rugby league player to be nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, finishing second that year. He later moved into coaching in rugby union and became defence coach for the England national rugby union team.
As a writer, Sinfield published the memoir The Extra Mile in 2023. He also co-authored With You Every Step with Rob Burrow; the hardback was published on 9 November 2023, is aimed at readers aged 6+, and brings together words from Burrow and Sinfield with illustrations by Rob Biddulph, Reggie Brown, David Litchfield, Gill Smith and Sam Usher. Sinfield’s fundraising for motor neurone disease is a major part of his recent work: in autumn 2022 he ran seven ultra marathons in seven days and raised almost £2 million, and in May 2023 he ran the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon, which he helped to found.
