Kazumi Yumoto is a Japanese author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She studied composition at Tokyo University of the Arts and initially worked in television and opera, writing scripts and librettos. Yumoto’s debut novel, The Friends, was published in 1992. The book explores themes of friendship and mortality and has been recognised in several countries.
Following her debut, Yumoto wrote additional novels for young readers, including The Spring Tone and The Letters. Her works often address complex emotional experiences from a child’s perspective. Yumoto’s writing has been translated into several languages, and her books are published in English by Faber & Faber.
In 1997, The Friends received the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Fiction.
