Kaye Webb biography

Kaye Webb was a British editor known for her significant contribution to children’s publishing. She began her career in journalism and illustration, working for various magazines before moving into book publishing. Webb is most recognised for her role as editor of Puffin Books, the children’s imprint of Penguin Books, where she worked from 1961 to 1979.

During her tenure at Puffin, Webb expanded the range of titles and introduced new authors and illustrators to young readers. She was instrumental in launching the Puffin Club in 1967, which aimed to foster a love of reading among children through magazines, competitions, and events. The club became a notable part of British children’s literary culture.

Webb also oversaw the publication of a wide variety of children’s books, including classic and contemporary works. She played a key role in developing the Puffin list, which included both fiction and non-fiction titles for different age groups. Her editorial approach was marked by a commitment to quality and accessibility in children’s literature.

In recognition of her services to children’s books, Kaye Webb was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1974.
