Katherine Arden is an author of fantasy, historical fantasy, horror and children’s books. She studied Russian and French at Middlebury College and graduated in 2011. Her Winternight trilogy includes The Bear and the Nightingale, The Girl in the Tower and The Winter of the Witch.
The Bear and the Nightingale was released on 17 January 2017 and is rooted in Russian folklore and medieval Russian history. The Girl in the Tower was released in hardcover on 5 December 2017, and The Winter of the Witch was released on 8 January 2019.
Arden also writes for younger readers. Small Spaces, the opening book in her middle-grade horror series, was released on 25 September 2018 by Putnam and is aimed at readers aged 8 to 13. The quartet continued with Dead Voices, Dark Waters and Empty Smiles; Empty Smiles was published as the finale on 9 August 2022.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts was published by Del Rey on 13 February 2024 and is a historical fantasy set in the final year of the First World War. Her picture book The Strangest Fish, illustrated by Zahra Marwan, was published by Astra Young Readers on 3 September 2024 for children aged 4 to 8. The Unicorn Hunters was published by Del Rey on 2 June 2026.
