Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Kate Wakeling is a British poet and writer known for her work in children’s poetry. She studied music at university and has a background in ethnomusicology. Wakeling’s poetry often explores themes of imagination, sound, and the natural world, drawing on her musical interests.
Her debut children’s poetry collection, Moon Juice, was published by The Emma Press in 2016. The collection features illustrations by Elīna Brasliņa and includes poems that play with language and rhythm. Moon Juice won the 2017 CLiPPA (Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award), a prize recognising outstanding poetry for children.
Wakeling’s second collection for children, Cloud Soup, was published by The Emma Press in 2021. This book continues her exploration of playful and inventive poetry for young readers. In addition to her children’s work, Wakeling has published poetry for adults, including the collection Heroines (The Emma Press, 2017).
Her poetry has been featured in various anthologies and magazines. Wakeling has also worked as a writer and performer, collaborating with musicians and artists on interdisciplinary projects. She regularly leads workshops and events for children and schools, encouraging engagement with poetry and creative writing.
In 2017, Moon Juice won the CLiPPA (Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award).
