Julio Serrano Echeverría biography

Julio Serrano Echeverría (born 1983) is a Guatemalan poet, writer and filmmaker. He co-founded the International Festival of Poetry of Quetzaltenango and established Libros Mínimos, an early Guatemalan digital imprint offering contemporary literature for free download. His work spans poetry, children’s literature and documentary projects.

His poetry collections include Central América, Estados de la materia, Antes del mar and Tierra. In children’s publishing he has written Dos cabezas para meter un gol, Balam, Lluvia y la Casa, No cualquier montaña and El animal en la piedra. His catalogue has been published in Spanish and in translation.

Balam & Lluvia’s House – translated by Lawrence Schimel and illustrated by Yolanda Mosquera – was published in English by The Emma Press. The book received an English PEN Translates award and Mosquera’s artwork was nominated for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration 2024. It was also shortlisted for CLiPPA 2024.

No cualquier montaña, created with illustrator Juan Palomino, was published by Amanuense in 2024, and Dos cabezas para meter un gol received an honourable mention in the Tercer Premio Centroamericano de Literatura Infantil.
