Judith Kerr was a German-born British writer and illustrator, renowned for her children’s books. She was born on 14 June 1923 in Berlin, Germany. Her family fled from the Nazi regime in 1933, eventually settling in the United Kingdom. Kerr studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London.
Her first and most famous book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, was published in 1968. This book has remained a classic in children’s literature, beloved by generations. Kerr is also well-known for her series featuring the character Mog the cat, beginning with Mog the Forgetful Cat in 1970. The series includes over a dozen titles, each exploring the adventures of the lovable cat.
In addition to her work for younger children, Kerr wrote a semi-autobiographical trilogy for older readers. The first book, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, was published in 1971. It is based on her experiences as a child refugee and is followed by Bombs on Aunt Dainty and A Small Person Far Away.
Kerr’s contributions to literature have been widely recognised. She received the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1974 for When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. In 2012, she was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to children’s literature and Holocaust education.
