Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Jess Mountfield, also credited as Jessica Mountfield, is an animator, illustrator, writer and lecturer. Her professional work includes documentaries, short films and idents created for organisations including the BBC, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, MTV and FX. She has also worked with scientists, charities and hospitals, and lectures at the University of the Arts London.
Mountfield works across traditional and digital animation, including hand-drawn 2D animation and stop-motion. Her films have been screened at international animation and film festivals. Her animation work has received awards including Best Short Form from the Royal Television Society and Best Commissioned Film from the London International Animation Festival.
Her debut children’s picture book, Jam is for Eating!, is published by Flying Eye Books. It follows Benny, a bat who proudly presents a batch of homemade jam, only to discover that his friends have devised a variety of unexpected uses for it instead of eating it. The book is published in the UK on 6 August 2026.
