Jane Yolen is an American author known for her extensive work in children’s and young adult literature. She has written over 400 books, including picture books, poetry, fantasy, and historical fiction. Yolen’s writing often draws on folklore, fairy tales, and myth, and she is recognised for her ability to blend traditional storytelling with contemporary themes.
Yolen’s first published book was Pirates in Petticoats, released in 1963. She has since produced a wide range of works, including the acclaimed picture book Owl Moon, which won the Caldecott Medal in 1988. Her other notable titles include The Devil’s Arithmetic, a historical novel for young readers, and the How Do Dinosaurs…? series, which she created with illustrator Mark Teague.
In addition to her fiction, Yolen has written poetry collections and edited anthologies. She has also contributed to the field of science fiction and fantasy, with works such as Briar Rose and The Pit Dragon Chronicles. Her books have been published by a range of publishers, including Penguin Random House and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
