Jan Pieńkowski biography

Jan Pieńkowski was a British author and illustrator, best known for his distinctive work in children’s literature. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Pieńkowski moved to England as a child. He studied English Classics at King’s College, Cambridge. Pieńkowski’s career in illustration began in the 1960s, and he became widely recognised for his innovative use of silhouette and paper engineering in children’s books.

Pieńkowski collaborated with writer Helen Nicoll on the popular Meg and Mog series, which debuted in 1972. The series, featuring the witch Meg, her cat Mog, and their friend Owl, became a staple of British children’s literature. Pieńkowski’s bold, graphic illustrations contributed to the books’ enduring appeal. He also worked with other authors, including Joan Aiken, illustrating titles such as The Kingdom Under the Sea.

In addition to his work as an illustrator, Pieńkowski was a pioneer of pop-up and novelty books. His book Haunted House, published in 1979, won the Kate Greenaway Medal, a prestigious British award for illustration. Pieńkowski’s paper engineering skills are evident in several other works, including Robot and Dinner Time.

Throughout his career, Pieńkowski illustrated over 140 books. His work is noted for its use of vibrant colour, silhouette, and innovative design. He received the Booktrust Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, recognising his significant contribution to children’s literature.
