Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Jan Carson is a Northern Irish writer whose work includes novels, short story collections and micro-fiction.
Her first novel, Malcolm Orange Disappears, was published in 2014. She followed it with the short story collection Children’s Children (2016) and the micro-fiction title Postcard Stories (2017).
Carson’s novel The Fire Starters was published in 2019. That year, it won the EU Prize for Literature for Ireland. The book also won the Kitschies Prize for Speculative Fiction.
Her novel The Raptures was published by Doubleday in 2022 and was subsequently shortlisted for the An Post Irish Novel of the Year and the Kerry Group Novel of the Year. Her writing has also been shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award and the Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Prize, and she has won the Harper’s Bazaar short story competition.
In 2023, Jan Carson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
