James Mayhew is a British author and illustrator, renowned for his contributions to children’s literature. He was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and grew up in the village of Blundeston, Suffolk. Mayhew studied at Maidstone College of Art, where he specialised in illustration. His career in children’s books began with the publication of Katie’s Picture Show in 1989, which introduced the character Katie, a young girl who explores famous paintings. This book marked the start of a successful series that encourages children to engage with art.
In addition to the Katie series, Mayhew has authored and illustrated numerous other books. Notable works include Ella Bella Ballerina, a series that introduces children to the world of ballet through the adventures of a young dancer. Mayhew’s storytelling often combines educational themes with imaginative narratives, making art and culture accessible to young readers.
Mayhew has collaborated with various authors and illustrators throughout his career. He has worked on projects such as The Knight Who Took All Day and Can You See a Little Bear?, showcasing his versatility in both writing and illustration. His work has been recognised for its contribution to children’s literature, earning him a place on the shortlist for the Kate Greenaway Medal.
Beyond books, Mayhew has been involved in live storytelling and illustration events, often performing with orchestras to bring stories to life through music and art. This unique approach has further cemented his reputation as a dynamic figure in children’s literature.
James Mayhew’s dedication to fostering a love of art and culture in children is evident through his extensive body of work. His books continue to be celebrated for their ability to inspire and educate young readers. In 2011, he was awarded the New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book Award for The Knight Who Took All Day.
