Summer 2019 – best new children’s and YA books – our picks
Here’s our selection of top new titles coming out in summer 2019. These reading recommendations include picture books, early and middle-grade fiction; young adult novels and non-fiction.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Ingela P Arrhenius graduated from art school in the early 1990s and has worked as an illustrator since then. Her early professional work included advertising and magazines, before her later work focused on products and books. She has created patterns for fabrics, wallpaper and stationery, as well as packaging and home accessories. Her illustration work uses retro style, typography and colour.
Her books for very young children include Where’s Mrs Ladybird?, Where’s Mrs Elephant?, Where’s Mr Tractor?, Peekaboo Zoo, Peekaboo Dinosaur, My BIG Playbook and My BIG Playbook: Farm. Several of these titles are board books or interactive books for babies and toddlers, with age guidance including 0–2 and 2–5 years.
Arrhenius illustrated the Felt Flaps series, and Where’s Mr Lion won the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book of the Year award. The first Felt Flaps books were published in 2016. By October 2021, the Felt Flaps series had sold more than 4 million copies.
Arrhenius has also worked on large-format and design-led children’s books. Animals was published by Walker Studio on 1 September 2016 and by Candlewick Studio on 27 September 2016. My Town, a 40-page hardback picture dictionary for young children, was published on 5 July 2018.
