Helen Ward is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She studied at Brighton School of Art, where she was taught by illustrator Raymond Briggs. Ward has written and illustrated numerous picture books, often collaborating with illustrator Wayne Anderson. Her books include The Tin Forest, Varmints, The Dragon Machine, and Wonderful Life. She has also illustrated classic tales such as The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse and The Hare and the Tortoise.
Ward’s illustrations are recognised for their detail and naturalistic style. She has received several awards for her work, including the National Art Library Illustration Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal shortlist for The Tin Forest in 2002. Her book Varmints, illustrated by Marc Craste, was shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal in 2009. Ward’s books have been published by Templar Publishing and Andersen Press.
In 2003, The Tin Forest was selected for the Booktrust Early Years Award shortlist. Varmints was adapted into an animated short film, which received a BAFTA nomination. Ward continues to be recognised for her contributions to children’s literature, with her books translated into several languages and included in international reading lists.
