Gretchen McNeil is an American author known for her young adult fiction, particularly in the thriller and horror genres. She has written several novels that blend suspense, mystery, and elements of the supernatural, often featuring teenage protagonists navigating high-stakes situations.
McNeil’s debut novel, Possess, was published in 2011. The story follows a teenage girl who discovers she can communicate with the dead and becomes involved in a series of exorcisms. She continued to explore dark and suspenseful themes in her subsequent works.
Her 2012 novel, Ten, is a modern retelling inspired by Agatha Christie’s classic And Then There Were None. The book centres on a group of teenagers stranded on an island, where they are targeted by an unknown killer. Ten has been noted for its fast-paced plot and atmospheric setting.
McNeil has also written the Don’t Get Mad duology, beginning with Get Even (2014) and followed by Get Dirty (2015). These novels focus on a group of girls who form a secret society to expose bullies at their school, only to find themselves implicated in a murder investigation.
Other works by McNeil include Relic (2014), 3:59 (2013), and I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl (2016), which showcase her range across genres from science fiction to contemporary comedy. She has also written the Girl series, starting with #MurderTrending (2018), which depicts a dystopian future where convicted criminals are executed on live television.
Gretchen McNeil’s books are published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins. Her novel Ten was published in 2012.
