George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, a British author and journalist. He is known for his novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), both of which have become classics of English literature. Orwell attended Eton College and later served with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. His first major work, Down and Out in Paris and London, was published in 1933 under the name George Orwell.
Orwell wrote several novels, including Burmese Days (1934), A Clergyman’s Daughter (1935), Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1936), and Coming Up for Air (1939). He also produced non-fiction works such as The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) and Homage to Catalonia (1938), the latter based on his experiences in the Spanish Civil War.
Animal Farm is an allegorical novella reflecting events leading up to the Russian Revolution and the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel depicting a totalitarian regime and the consequences of mass surveillance and loss of individual freedom. Both works have been widely translated and adapted for stage, film, and radio.
Orwell’s writing has received numerous accolades posthumously. Nineteen Eighty-Four was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.” His works remain part of the curriculum in schools across the United Kingdom.
