Franz Kafka was a German-speaking Bohemian novelist and short story writer. He studied law at the German University in Prague and worked in insurance while writing fiction.
Kafka’s major works include The Metamorphosis (1915), The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926). His writing, marked by themes of alienation, bureaucracy and existential anxiety, has had a lasting influence on 20th-century literature. Much of his work was published posthumously by his friend Max Brod, despite Kafka’s instructions that it be destroyed.
The Trial was first published in 1925.
