Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Fiona Collins is a storyteller and author who works with traditional tales from Wales and other cultures. Her published work for younger readers includes North Wales Folk Tales for Children, illustrated by Ed Fisher and published by The History Press.
She has also written and co-written folklore collections including Denbighshire Folk Tales, Wrexham County Folk Tales, Folk Tales for Bold Girls and Folk Tales of the Ever After. Her work includes retellings connected with Welsh legend, oral storytelling and folk traditions.
Collins works in English and Welsh. In 2019, she was named Welsh Learner of the Year at the National Eisteddfod. Literature Wales has listed her as the lead artist for Lockdown Legends Online, a project in which older people in Wales shared memories and family stories for a collected book.
Her YA novel Heledd’s Song follows Seren, a fourteen-year-old girl who enters a dream world linked with seventh-century Pengwern and meets Heledd after the Mercian war. Heledd’s Song was published by Honno Welsh Women’s Press on 23 July 2026.
