Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Fernanda Frick H. is a Chilean animation director, illustrator, storyboard artist and comics creator. She has worked in both two-dimensional and computer-generated animation, served as an art director at the animation studio Nathan Love and worked as creative director on a musical segment for the Apple TV+ series Yo Gabba GabbaLand!.
Her fourth animated short film, Here’s the Plan, received the Jury Prize at SIGGRAPH Asia and was shown at festivals including Anima Mundi, Chilemonos, SANFIC and the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. Editorial Planeta published her first graphic novel, Trazos, in 2019, followed by a picture-book adaptation of Here’s the Plan in 2023.
Frick H. wrote and illustrated the middle-grade graphic novel Raise the Bar, her US publishing debut. It follows Sam Sanchez, a young Chilean weightlifter who hopes to become her country’s first Olympic gold medallist in the sport, despite lacking a coach, suitable equipment and consistent family support. Sam earns an opportunity to train at a high-performance centre while attempting to qualify for the Pan American Games.
