Waugh’s early satirical novels include Decline and Fall (1928) and A Handful of Dust (1934). He gained international recognition with Brideshead Revisited (1945), which explores themes of faith, memory and social change in interwar England. His later work includes the Sword of Honour trilogy (1952–1961), based on his experiences in the Second World War.
