Eric Hill was a British author and illustrator, best known for creating the popular children’s book series featuring the character Spot the dog. Hill began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator before moving into advertising. In 1980, he published Where’s Spot?, introducing the lift-the-flap format that became a hallmark of the series. The book was published by Frederick Warne & Co.
The Spot series has been translated into more than sixty languages and has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. Hill wrote and illustrated numerous titles in the series, including Spot Goes to the Farm, Spot’s First Christmas, and Spot Goes to School. The books are noted for their simple text and interactive design, aimed at pre-school children.
In addition to the books, Spot became the subject of television adaptations, including the animated series The Adventures of Spot, which first aired in 1987. Hill’s work has received recognition for its contribution to early childhood literacy and interactive storytelling.
In 2008, Eric Hill was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to children’s literature.
