Enid Mary Blyton (11 August 1897 – 28 November 1968) was an English author renowned for her prolific output of children’s literature. Born in East Dulwich, London, she spent her childhood in Beckenham, Kent. Blyton was educated at St. Christopher’s School for Girls in Beckenham, where she excelled in sports and became head girl. She later trained as a teacher at Ipswich High School and worked briefly as a governess before dedicating herself to writing in the early 1920s.
Her first book, Child Whispers, a collection of poems, was published in 1922. Blyton’s writing career flourished as she produced a vast array of works, including novels, short stories, poems, and educational books. She is best known for creating enduring children’s series such as Noddy, The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Adventure Series, and Malory Towers. These books have been translated into over 90 languages and have sold more than 600 million copies worldwide, making her one of the most translated authors in history.
Blyton’s writing was characterized by its straightforward style and imaginative storytelling, often featuring themes of adventure, mystery, and fantasy.
In her personal life, Blyton married Hugh Pollock in 1924, who was also her publisher. They had two daughters, Gillian and Imogen. The couple divorced in 1942, and Blyton remarried Kenneth Darrell Waters in 1943. She continued to write prolifically until her health declined in the 1960s. Blyton passed away on 28 November 1968 at the age of 71 in Hampstead, London.
