Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Elys Dolan is a British author and illustrator known for her humorous picture books for children. She studied illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, where she completed an MA in Children’s Book Illustration. Dolan’s work is characterised by detailed illustrations and comedic storytelling, often featuring animal characters in imaginative settings.
Her debut picture book, Weasels, was published by Nosy Crow in 2013. The book received recognition for its inventive approach and visual humour. Dolan has since written and illustrated several other titles, including Nuts in Space and Steven Seagull: Action Hero, both published by Nosy Crow. She has also illustrated books for other authors and contributed to anthologies.
Dolan’s books have been shortlisted for awards such as the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. She regularly visits schools and festivals to talk about her work and run workshops on illustration and storytelling.
In 2019, Elys Dolan published Knighthood for Beginners with Oxford University Press.
