Elie Wiesel was a Romanian-born American writer, professor and Nobel laureate. A survivor of the Holocaust, he was deported with his family to Auschwitz in 1944 and later to Buchenwald, where he was liberated in 1945.
His memoir Night (first published in Yiddish in 1956 and in French in 1958) is one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust and has been translated into more than thirty languages. Wiesel went on to write novels, essays and plays that addressed themes of memory, faith and human rights.
He taught at several universities, including Boston University, and became a prominent activist for Holocaust remembrance and humanitarian causes. In 1986 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
