Eirlys Hunter biography

Eirlys Hunter is a writer of children’s fiction originally from the United Kingdom. She moved to New Zealand in 1983. Hunter has written novels for children and young adults, as well as short stories and educational material. Her work often explores themes relevant to young readers, including adventure and family relationships.

Hunter’s published books include The Mapmakers’ Race, which was released by Gecko Press in 2018. This novel follows a family of children who enter a mapmaking competition in a fantastical setting. She has also written The Robber and the Millionaire (1996), Coldkeep Castle (2001), and The Queen-Seekers (2003). In addition to her fiction, Hunter has contributed to anthologies and educational publications.

Hunter has taught creative writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington. She has also been involved in writing workshops for children and adults.

In 2019, The Mapmakers’ Race was shortlisted for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.
