Children’s book news for February 2026: CLiPPA opens, Carnegies longlists land, BBC screens Lord of the Flies, plus Information Book Award and ALCS Education Writers’ shortlist updates.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Eilish Fisher is a children’s author and poet whose debut middle-grade verse novel, Fia and the Last Snow Deer, was published by Puffin on 26 September 2024, with illustrations by Dermot Flynn. Set in prehistoric Ireland, the story follows Fia and her snow deer, Solas, on a quest bound up with winter, myth and survival.
Fisher studied at Maynooth University, completing a Bachelor’s degree in English, History and Medieval Irish Studies, a Master’s in Early Medieval Irish History and Literature, and a doctorate in Medieval English Literature. Her poetry has appeared in a range of magazines and journals, and she has participated in mentoring and development programmes, including a Laureate na nÓg mentorship with Children’s Books Ireland, a Words Ireland mentorship, and a full Literary Bursary Award from the Arts Council of Ireland.
Fia and the Last Snow Deer gained significant recognition following publication. It won the 2024 An Post Irish Book Awards Specsavers Children’s Book of the Year (Senior). In 2025 it received two honours at the KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards: the overall KPMG Book of the Year and the Eilís Dillon Award for a first children’s book.
Fisher’s second novel in verse, The Waters and the Wild, was published by Puffin on 25 September 2025.
Most recently, Fisher’s Fia and the Last Snow Deer won both the KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year and the Eilís Dillon Award in 2025.
