Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Drew Daywalt is an American author known for his work in children’s literature. He gained significant recognition with his debut picture book, The Day the Crayons Quit, published in 2013. The book, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, became a bestseller and received numerous accolades, including the E.B. White Read-Aloud Award. It was also named a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book.
Daywalt followed up with a sequel, The Day the Crayons Came Home, in 2015, which also achieved bestseller status and was well-received by critics. His collaboration with Jeffers continued to be successful, further establishing his reputation in the field of children’s literature.
In addition to his work with crayons, Daywalt authored The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors, published in 2017 and illustrated by Adam Rex. This book was praised for its humour and creativity, adding to Daywalt’s portfolio of engaging children’s stories.
Before his career in children’s books, Daywalt worked in the film and television industry, writing for various projects. His transition to children’s literature marked a significant shift, allowing him to reach a new audience with his imaginative storytelling.
Daywalt’s books have been translated into multiple languages, broadening their reach and impact. His ability to blend humour with relatable themes has resonated with both children and adults, contributing to his success as a children’s author.
In 2019, Daywalt published The Epic Adventures of Huggie & Stick, illustrated by David Spencer, further expanding his repertoire. His works continue to be celebrated for their creativity and appeal to young readers.
