David Roberts is a British illustrator known for his work in children’s and young adult literature. He studied fashion design at Manchester Metropolitan University before beginning his career as a children’s book illustrator. Roberts has illustrated numerous books, collaborating with authors such as Julia Donaldson, Philip Ardagh, Sally Gardner, and Andrea Beaty.
Roberts is the illustrator of the popular Dirty Bertie series, written by Alan MacDonald, and the Magnificent Makers series by Thea Oljelund. He has also illustrated the Ada Lace series by Emily Calandrelli and the Rosie Revere, Engineer series by Andrea Beaty. His partnership with Philip Ardagh on the Eddie Dickens trilogy has been widely recognised.
Roberts illustrated The Dunderheads by Paul Fleischman, which was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2010. He has also worked with Sally Gardner on the Tinder and The Fairy Catalogue. His illustrations for Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty have received critical acclaim and contributed to the book’s popularity in schools.
David Roberts received the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Gold Award in 2006 for Mouseton Abbey, written by Joanna Bicknell. He has been shortlisted multiple times for the Kate Greenaway Medal, including for The Dunderheads and Tinder. In 2018, he illustrated Suffragette: The Battle for Equality by David Roberts, which was published by Two Hoots.
