Dave Roman biography

Dave Roman is a comics writer and illustrator best known for the children’s graphic novel series Astronaut Academy. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, he worked as a comics editor for Nickelodeon Magazine from 1998 until the magazine ceased publication in 2009.

Roman created Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity and its sequels with First Second Books, and wrote the supernatural mystery collection Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery. He also co-created the humour series Teen Boat! with illustrator John Patrick Green, published by Clarion/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Additional credits include co-authoring the graphic novels X-Men: Misfits and The Last Airbender: Zuko’s Story.

His standalone graphic novel Unicorn Boy was published in March 2024 by First Second, with Hachette Children’s Group publishing the UK edition.

Recognition for Roman’s work includes the Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Book Award, Grades 4-6 Graphic Novel, for Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity in the 2014-2015 cycle, and the Children’s Book of the Year: Graphic Novel at The Week Junior Book Awards 2025 for Unicorn Boy.
