Daphne du Maurier biography

Daphne du Maurier was a British author known for her novels, short stories, and plays. She was born in London and became widely recognised for her works of fiction, many of which blend elements of suspense, romance, and the supernatural. Du Maurier’s writing career began in the early 1930s, and she published her first novel, The Loving Spirit, in 1931.

Among her most notable works is the novel Rebecca, published in 1938, which has remained one of her most enduring titles. Other significant novels include Jamaica Inn (1936), Frenchman’s Creek (1941), and My Cousin Rachel (1951). Du Maurier also wrote short stories, with collections such as The Birds and Other Stories (1952), which includes the story “The Birds.”

In addition to her fiction, du Maurier wrote biographies and historical works, including The Du Mauriers (1937), a family history. Her writing has been published by various publishers, including Virago and Penguin.

Daphne du Maurier was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1969.
